    Jubilee Day

    3:30 pm

    Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church
    902 SW Lee Blvd.
    Lawton, OK 73501

    NamonMelvin

Featured Speaker: Dr. Namon C. Melvin, Sr.

    Jubilee History:

The concept of Jubilee is deeply rooted in the Judeo/Christian tradition, emanating from the 5th Century B.C. The words, “Jubilee Year” literally mean “Year of the Rams”. The Ram’s Horn signifies great sanctity and supernatural effect.

Jubilee Year, in ancient times, was the final cycle of fifty years, consisting of seven Sabbatical Year periods, or forty-nine years, plus the fiftieth year. The Jubilee Year served two functions:

    1. The automatic release or emancipating of a Jew, who for one reason or another had at some moment within the preceding forty-nine years become enslaved to a fellow Jew; and

    2. The automatic release or return to the original owner of his family property, whether fields or houses in unwalled—i.e., country-towns which had been sold to a fellow Jew during the course of a similar forty-nine year period.

There is powerful symbolism in the celebration of Jubilee Day by Branches of the Association. One of them is the Passover Feast. In the biblical history of Israel, the miraculous escape of the Hebrew Children from the bondage of slavery under the Egyptian Pharaoh finds strong parallels in the “escape” from slavery of Blacks in America. After a series of awful plagues, Pharaoh finally relents and “lets the children of Israel go” free. He is finally convinced when the Death Angel “passes-over” Egypt, sparing only those houses with the blood of the lamb painted on the lentel of the door. Those houses not painted with blood, saw their first-born struck dead.

The African slave identified strongly with this biblical account found in Exodus. They too looked forward to the day when the “death-angel” would pass-over the South and set him free. The “death-angel” became the Great Civil War that eventually threw off the yoke of bondage. It is significant, therefore, that Black Americans come together once a year to celebrate their freedom from slavery. Jubilee Day is a time when the history of our suffering as slaves is remembered; the experience of segregation is recounted; and, the strategies for facing equality and justice for the future are reshaped. We must never forget, forfeit, or falsify our past.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration

    5:00 pm

    Cameron Aggie Rec Center
    Cameron University
    Lawton, OK

    Featured speaker:  Ms. Myrlie Evers-Williams

Ms. Myrlie Evers-Williams is the widow of former civil rights leader Rev. Medger Evers, who was assassinated in 1963.  Ms. Evers/Williams is the first speaker of this annual event who is the spouse of a former nationally remembered civil rights leader who was slain during the civil rights era of the 1960’s. She will bring to the MLK event not only her own history as a civil rights activist but also her notable non-violent response to the murder of her husband.

Ms. Evers fought to see to it that her husband’s assassin was brought to justice.  Although it took more than 30 years, De La Beckwith was eventually found guilty in 1994 of her husband’s murder.  He was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole and died in prison.  Besides her quest for justice, Myrlie rebuilt her life following her husband’s death. She earned a bachelor’s degree Ms. Myrlie Evers-Williams pursued and won the position of chairperson of the NAACP in 1995 and saw to the improvements of the organization in terms of financial stability and organizational strength. She was the first woman to serve as president/CEO of the NAACP.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration was initiated in 1985 by Cameron Campus Ministry (CCM). The MLK Celebration has always been and is still made possible by generous and committed sponsorship of the event from persons, churches and businesses of the Lawton/Ft. Sill community and from other supporters in the State of Oklahoma including the local NAACP--Lawton, Oklahoma Branch #6131.

Rosa Parks, Civil Rights Pioneer, To Be Honored With Stamp in 2013

Parks-Forever-single-v3 Fifty-seven years ago this month, Rosa Parks was arrested after refusing to give up her seat at the front of the Cleveland Avenue bus in Montgomery, Alabama. The response to her arrest was a boycott of Montgomery’s bus system that lasted 381 days and thrust a young local pastor, Martin Luther King, Jr., into the spotlight. In 2013, the U.S. Postal Service will honor the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rosa Parks, an extraordinary American activist who became an iconic figure in the civil rights movement. The portrait that appears on the stamp (created by Thomas Blackshear II) emphasizes Parks’s quiet determination. In addition to this stamp honoring Rosa Parks, USPS will issue two other stamps in 2013 to commemorate significant anniversaries in the struggle for African-American civil rights. One of them celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation; the other has not yet been revealed. The Rosa Parks stamp will be issued as a Forever® stamp. (Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.) A date of issue has not yet been set.

Per Oklahoma Senate Joint Resolution No. 21--Third Saturday in June of each year declared an Official Holiday known as Juneteenth National Freedom Day. Juneteenth or the 19th of June is the date slavery ended in America. General Gordon Granger traveled to Galveston, Texas to read General Order No. 3, June 19, 1865. This was two and one-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is now recognized as a local, state, and national observance. This is the human spirit and legacy of America.

The Celebration under the direction of the Freedman's Bureau in 1867 was the first to have events where families and friends gathered to revere their history. Activities centered on dress, food, speeches, music, parades and a variety of cultural activities became the centerpiece of the Juneteenth Celebration. Bar-B-Que became the food of choice. Food was abundant because everyone prepared a special dish. A true Juneteenth Celebration left visitors well-satisfied and with enough conversation to last until the next.

    The Lawton-Fort Sill City-Wide Juneteenth Committee has been able to continue this national, state and local tradition with help from financial supporters;
